MPF Services was built on a solid knowledge and respect for the countryside, alongside a duty of welfare and respect for nature. Quite a lot of our calls are for mole removal and as we are often asked about moles and why we have to trap them, we offer a little bit of information in understanding the mole and it's contribution to the environment.

MOLECATCHING

The role of the molecatcher in the British countryside goes back hundreds of years with mole traps having been found from Roman times.

In the 1800's & 1900's,  mole catchers used to wander from large country estate to estate, exchanging their molecatching services for food and accomodation, moving on when the mole catching was done.  Romantic though this may sound, mole catching is a difficult job, and like many traditional skills, molecatching has been in decline since poison and gas were introduced in modern day to eradicate moles.

When strychnine poison was withdrawn for mole control in 2006, the demand for more traditional methods, without the use of poison or gas began to rise once more.

Many larger pest control companies are abandoning mole control work because trapping is too time consuming, DEFRA states that you are advised to inspect set traps every 12-24 hours to eliminate suffering to moles.

Gassing is totally ineffective and can only be used in certain locations and weather conditions and is not environmentally friendly, pumping gas into the ground or using pellets to eradicate moles destroys earthworms and ground living organisms, and as gas cannot be used in close proximity to a building this means that in most modern gardens this method is not an option.

Traditional molecatchers are able to work around these problems and have the skills and expertise to trap moles humanely and despatch them quickly. Using effective traps such as a barrel or claw style ensures that the mole is dealt with swiftly and humanely without the need for anything else.

As we are experiencing more milder wet winters, the mole population has been increasing rapidly across the UK and it is estimated there are over 33 million moles in the UK.

It is well known that moles are difficult to catch, they are well protected because of their underground mazes, are extremely effective at detecting smells and vibrations and once they detect a threat they retreat at remarkable speed to deeper safer runs, blocking tunnels behind them. Moles live on average for four years, and whilst the odd mole hill here and there is not too much of a problem, if left unchecked moles can ruin your lawn and landscaping.

For agriculture however, moles can have a detrimental effect. Soil in molehills can contaminate silage which is used for feeding livestock, listeria can also be present in the soil and can be consumed by animals in the silage. On arable land, mole tunnels can expose seedlings, moles push up plants and expose crops to damage by frost.

The removal of a number of moles from an area reduces competition for food among those remaining for the next season. Reducing the number of moles allows for natural migration and results in less competition for food.  Mole catching therefore plays a small part in managing the countryside, and is based upon knowledge, experience and tradition.
